UPSC Mains Answer Writing: A Practical Framework

Updated 2026-08-08 · Editorial guide

Turn the directive word and syllabus demand into a clear, balanced, time-bound answer.

Decode the demand

Circle the directive—discuss, examine, analyse, evaluate or critically comment—and identify the topic, scope and expected balance. A correct answer can still lose marks if it answers a nearby question rather than the one asked.

Build a visible structure

Use a brief introduction, logically grouped body headings and a constructive conclusion. Definitions, constitutional articles, committee recommendations, examples, maps or flowcharts should support reasoning rather than become decoration.

Practise under constraints

Write to the word limit and time available. Afterwards, compare your answer with the demand, not with an imagined ideal essay. The protected Mains workspace is for uploading and receiving personal evaluation; this guide is only a public method note.
